  • Shallow dish
  • Non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan
  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 4 slices sourdough bread Preferably day-old or slightly stale
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk Can use heavy cream for extra richness
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup or sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until fully combined.
  • Pour the mixture into a shallow dish wide enough to fit a slice of sourdough bread.
  • Dip each slice of sourdough bread into the batter, letting it soak for 10-15 seconds per side to absorb the mixture evenly.
  • Heat a non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
  • Place the soaked bread slices into the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and slightly crispy.
  • Repeat with the remaining slices, adding more butter if necessary.
  • Serve immediately with maple syrup, fresh berries, or your favorite toppings.

Notes

For extra crispiness, place the cooked French toast slices on a baking sheet and bake at 300°F (150°C) for 5 minutes. This prevents sogginess while maintaining a fluffy interior. Pair with crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, or fresh fruit for a balanced breakfast.
